Books & Buddies Reading Mentor

Partner with a child to help improve their reading and language skills.
Requirements: Transportation to and from school, criminal background check.
Time Commitment: 1 hour per week for 12 weeks, plus 1 program training session.
Locations: Any of the schools Spread the Word Nevada serves (see list)

Breakfast with Books Volunteer

Be responsible and/or assist with event set up, sign-in, raffle, distribution of breakfast snack and books, as well as perform or assist with storytelling reading.
Requirements: Transportation to and from BWB site, ability to lift 20-25 pounds.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per month
Locations: Elementary schools in Henderson, Las Vegas, and North Las Vegas.

Book Drive Volunteer

Assist with organizing book drives, including making phone calls, overseeing book drive at location.
Boxing and counting donations, working with Spread the Word Nevada to coordinate pick-up.
Requirements: Outgoing personality.
Time Commitment: Varies depending on location and number of books.
Location: Various locations throughout the Las Vegas area.

Special Events Volunteer

Assist with event set up, clean up, as well as distribute books and information.
Requirements: Transportation to and from event site.
Ability to lift heavy boxes.
Time Commitment: Varies per event, usually 3 hour shifts
Location: Various locations throughout Southern Nevada.

Administrative Support Volunteer

Draft letters, prepare newsletters and other correspondence, compile information packets and assist with other administrative duties as needed.
Requirements: Computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
Time Commitment: 2-4 hours per week.
Location: Henderson, NV

Spanish Translator Volunteer

Translate materials from English to Spanish.
Requirements: Access to computer, basic typing/word processing skills
Time Commitment: 3-4 times a year, 10 hours
Location: Any location with computer access

Cleaning Parties

We host weekly book cleanings at these four senior centers:

Boulder City Senior Center
1001 Arizona St.
When: Every Friday morning

Henderson Senior Center
27 E. Texas Ave.
When: Every Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.

Lieburn Senior Center
6230 Garwood Ave.
When: Every first and third Wednesday

East Las Vegas Senior Center
5700 Missouri Ave.
When: Every Thursday of the month, 9:30 a.m.

Our Volunteers Rock

Two classes of developmentally challenged young adults also clean books on a regular basis. One class is at Helen J. Stewart School and the other is at Foothill High School.
