Kids to Kids Announces New Partner Reading Initiative:
Books & Buddies Multi-Generational Reading Program
May
5 , 2007 - Kids to Kids
will launch a new program in fall of 2007, the Books &
Buddies Multi-Generational Reading Program.
This
volunteer-driven program will be funded by a recent grant
in the amount of $45,000 from the Nevada Community Foundation.
The
Books & Buddies Multi-Generational Reading Program was
created to improve the reading and comprehension skills of
at-risk children by partnering them with senior citizen and
corporate volunteers acting as reading companions and "models."
Working together, the volunteer and student will focus on
further developing the child's reading proficiency, comprehension
and skills.
Books
& Buddies will provide these children with the much-needed
individualized attention to augment literacy efforts within
the classroom. For one hour each week, a volunteer "buddy"
and their partnered child will meet to read and work together
on skill-building activities.

Said
a representative of the Nevada Community Foundation, "The
Nevada Community Foundation is pleased to invest in Kids
to Kids' Books & Buddies initiative. We are
confident this program will build and foster community and
provide children and senior adults a wonderful opportunity
for intergenerational sharing and engagement."
The
funding for this initiative is provided through the Community
Investment Process at the Nevada Community Foundation. Projects
funded through this process must foster "people becoming
more engaged and involved in the community, people building
stronger relationships and investing in one another, and people
reaching across boundaries and interests towards building
a shared sense of responsibility to one another."
Lisa
Habighorst, Executive Director of Spread
the Word Nevada: Kids to Kids, stated, "We
are thrilled to have the support from the Nevada Community
Foundation. We could not have started this program without
their help and belief in what we do. This program will be
a tremendous success and we are proud to have partnered with
such a wonderful foundation that shares our goal of helping
each child improve their literacy and reading skills."
